The Saint in the Sinner

Description

Shadows harshened, darkened, held with their coldness, sliding against his skin like needlework pressing deeper, seeking to part against flesh, drag across old wounds, drench his form held alone in a sorrow that was all too telling in that coming shade. In those thoughts, cast out to a sea silent, lost upon the waves of a grief so terrible, too familiar, breaking and bending and telling - whispering of so many failures, of beating hearts silenced, crawling - creeping under the skin, bringing sweat, blood to rise, crying with the temptation of it all - and the pity, the fear ... lost against with the smallest gasp of a breath ... the stain on the knife ... the gleaming edge ruined, tarnished by parted flesh. Clawing weakly at the other, for release, for substance, for mercy ... never to be found, never to find. Sensations choking against his throat, burning, searing substance - to rise, sickly and sweet and never wanting. No more, yet the past pressed in, curling merciless fingers into his reluctant head. Still his head refused to bow, as the crimson seeped between fingers - the earth below, those shadows, unfurling their way into his skull, too weighed, but held high. Always questing, asking himself - why? - you kill all those people - you kill them all - yoy take their lives - you do your job. For money. For marks. To silence tongues and bleed out hearts. Gods be damned - can anyone see those stains on your soul? - too familiar, too harsh. Cutting him deeper than the scars such jobs had ever brought. Still he waited, against the edge, the blood draining and eyes below looking up at him there. The scene shivered past his skin, crooking his smile and forgetting the rest. No strings of the heart left to be plucked. Nothing to burst his veins open in song. A question never to be asked - but always hinted - always the marks, the scars ... - the price to pay. A painful, bitter smile that broke. The smile meant only for him, to know how twisted he was within - spilling from his lips so cleanly ... burdened and freed ...

Once more featured in the piece above is the "scout" Shallow Grave - Isi - someone I seem to be drawing quite a lot lately, despite my claims to 'never draw him again' after each successive time. Oh, how life is silly like that. For those not knowing, he is the most recent addition to my Lives for Hire/Killjoy lineup, and is currently a member of the orgization ERA in Serriopolis where he serves as an assasin - Commander of "Scouting". The man is strange, neurotic, an engima, and someone I don't trust and don't quite understand. I find it amazing what he can shoulder with a smile ... unnerving as such may be.

I really would like to explore Grave's character more, though he is reluctant to share any information whatsoever with me. There are two people he seems to confide in, but attempting to draw information from either is akin to pulling teeth - or in one instance, offering my teeth to be pulled - and thus, I can't say much is known. He seems to have started "scouting" at a very young age, though I cannot be sure - as it is the only job he has ever had. Each one of those tally marks represents a certain unlucky soul and a shallow grave to match. I don't have an accurate count, but it is upwards of six hundred ... and constantly being added to.

My style was being rather silly here, and I am not ... sure if I am fond of the end result. The tattoos were an absolute mess to do, though I had fun with them once I was finished. Neither they nor the tally marks are especially a for-sure making, though I did try. Just like my past renderings of him, this took a long, messy, horrible while to do, and if anything, I am glad to have something to show for it.

Enjoy.
